Bowman-Turnbull family papers, 1777-1972 (1803-1893).

The papers consist of personal, financial and legal documents pertaining to the business activities and, to a lesser degree, the personal lives of the Bowman and Turnbull families. Business papers include correspondence, invoices, receipts and accounts reflecting their involvement in the cotton and sugar trade. Several letters are from the firm of W. & D. Urquhart, New Orleans commission merchants. Antebellum items include a mortgage lien containing a list of slaves (Dec. 12, 1844) and a letter concerning the transfer of slaves (Feb. 2, 1856). The letter is accompanied by a list of slaves. The papers of Catherine Rucker Turnbull, Daniel Turnbull and James P. Bowman comprise a large portion of this group. Personal papers contain family letters and genealogical sketches. Letters discuss current events, personal activities, family matters and health. Printed material includes several newspapers and newspaper clippings relating the history of plantation houses in West Feliciana Parish, particularly Rosedown Plantation.
